Finding the Root Cause
Our first step when it comes to thyroid conditions is to find the root cause. Since 90 percent of hypothyroidism and 100% of hyperthyroidism are autoimmune, it begs us to ask the question, “What is autoimmunity?” The answer is inflammation and leaky gut.
What is leaky gut?
Leaky gut refers to an unhealthy gut lining that may have cracks or holes, allowing partially digested food and toxins to leak into the tissues beneath it. This can trigger inflammation and lead to various health issues. It’s connected to a 3,600 percent increase in the diagnosis of an autoimmune disease, but the problem is that it can take up to 9 years of symptoms and dysfunction before healthcare providers come to a diagnosis. There are no current drugs to treat leaky gut, so healthcare providers aren’t trained on how to assess, treat, and educate clients on the seriousness of this condition. Here are the 8 common triggers of leaky gut:
- Diet
- Medications (PPIs, ABX, Steroids, NSAIDs)
- Infections (#1 root cause)
- Cortisol dysregulation
- Insulin resistance (dysglycemia)
- Low hormones (Thyroid, progesterone, estrogen, D, T)
- Xenobiotics (environmental chemicals linked to lowering beneficial microbes and causing hormone dysregulation)
- Vagal nerve impairment (adverse childhood experiences, TBI, concussions, PTSD)
