Dear Valued Subscribers,
Welcome to Dr. Autoimmune’s Wellness Way Newsletter where we explore the profound impact of health choices and interventions on our well-being.
Today, we’re delving into the world of birth control pills, and examining the profound effects they have on women; particularly their impact on increasing thyroid-binding globulin levels and how functional medicine can help.
The Role of Birth Control Pills
Birth control pills are a familiar choice for many, offering a means of oral contraception and relief from issues like acne or dysmenorrhea. However, what we often fail to recognize are the hidden implications these pills can have on our health.
Countless women using birth control pills find themselves entangled in a web of unexplained side effects, from severe depression to inexplicable weight gain, mood disorders, temperature fluctuations, hair loss, and a slowed metabolism. These perplexing symptoms leave them wondering about the root cause of their discomfort but are still too afraid to go off the pill.
The Critical Link
In the realm of thyroid function and its intricate relationship with medication interactions, a fascinating and often overlooked aspect involves the influence of a particular component that can lead to a significant increase in thyroid-binding globulin (TBG).
TBG is a crucial protein in the bloodstream responsible for carrying thyroid hormones, specifically thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which are essential for regulating various bodily processes, including metabolism, energy production, and overall cellular function.
When TBG levels are disrupted, it can have far-reaching consequences for thyroid function.
This disruption primarily occurs as a result of a subtle drug interaction rather than a conventional hypothyroid disease. Unlike typical hypothyroidism, which is characterized by a deficiency of thyroid hormones, this interaction focuses on how certain medications can lead to an elevation in TBG levels. As TBG levels rise, more thyroid hormones become bound to this protein, rendering them less available for the body to use at receptor sites.
This relates to birth control pills because some medications, including birth control pills, can lead to an increase in TBG levels. When TBG levels rise, more thyroid hormones become bound to it, reducing the free fraction of T3 and T4 thyroid hormones. This affects the body’s ability to use these hormones, even if they are produced adequately, potentially leading to disruptions in thyroid function. So, birth control pills may influence thyroid function or even mimic its symptoms by affecting TBG levels and hormone availability.
Diagnostic Power in Functional Medicine
Understanding and addressing these complex drug interactions can be crucial for individuals who may experience symptoms that mimic hypothyroidism, despite having normal thyroid hormone levels when tested conventionally (TSH).
In the realm of functional medicine, we aim to uncover these hidden issues through diagnostic precision. In the case of thyroid function and TBG disruption, functional medicine seeks to identify the specific drugs or substances responsible for the increased TBG levels, allowing for a more nuanced approach to care and management.
A simple laboratory test can measure thyroid-binding globulin levels and the ratios of free T3 and T4 to protein-bound T3 and T4. Armed with this knowledge, we can empower you to take control of your health journey.
